Statewide EAD project survey

Over the past few years, some members of Georgia's archival community have expressed the desire to have a state-wide EAD project. Given UGA's and DLG's recent successes in developing finding aid databases, we are wondering if now might be the time to leverage our expertise to develop a state-wide EAD database. As a first tentative step we'd like to gauge interest and basic institutional needs before deciding whether such a project might be feasible.

85 reasons to love your librarian

heh heh... some of these are actually well thought, while others are clearly humorous...1. Librarians take care of libraries, which are still invaluable today.2. Not all information is on the internet.3. Older books still hold great cultural significance.4. Libraries are still repositories for some of the most valuable works of literature in the world.5. Even with the internet, the library is still the best place to do research.6. Girls with glasses can still rock the “sexy librarian” look.7. “Sexy Librarian” is still a popular costume at Halloween.8.

The Opensource model, what it is and how it works

Excellent article and overview of opensource, covering everything from licensing (yes, opensource has it), its evolution, security, issues, & more.
Raymond has compared the development of OSS to a bazaar, where large numbers of interested individuals congregate to contribute (code contributors are called committers) or to provide peer review of the wares in the market (in this case, testing and new feature recommendations for the software in the repositories [1]).

Library news roundup: nexgen catalogs, institutional repositories, and more

Well, since I have so many little library related tidbits floating around in my reader, I'm just going to do a roundup:

Opensource ILS projects and how I learned to love the library catalog

okay, pardon the bad pun on dr. strangelove...I've been following some of the opensource ils projects with interest. evergreen (launched by the Georgia Public Lib System), is still in heavy development.

the unloved blog...

ok, this isn't really the unloved blog. I've just been busy finishing up classwork and the holidays. My carpal tunnel also reappeared in mid december so I have been resting my hands as much as possible. I'm trying to clear my professional development calendar now to give me as much space as possible for the Peabodies and other upcoming projects. I spend quite a bit of time outside of work doing things, so the more things I finish up NOW the better. 99.5 % Finished I've finished up the last of my New Georgia Encyclopedia articles.

Project updates

Institutional Repositories Well, the Institutional Repositories Metadata subgroup(? I'm not sure what we are actually called but that will suffice for me) met. It was very interesting ---so many perplexing issues in terms of metadata for a group digital repository. We will be meeting again in the near future. Online Portfolios I'm also going to be working with a few folks to look out online portfolios/profiles for library staff. I think the idea is that the portfolio/profile could be linked off of the staff directory.
